Magento vs WooCommerce. Which one should I go for?

If you are into developing websites as a profession, you are already aware of the fact that there are a bunch of options available for your eCommerce needs. But how to decide on which is the one suitable for the respective project you are working on? Let us look into two well-known eCommerce alternatives that are there in the market, .i.e. WooCommerce and Magento.

Various factors are included to look at while deciding on which eCommerce to choose from, such as:

  1. Project’s Budget
  2. The volume of sales/inquiries
  3. Required features
  4. Modes of payment you want to offer

Answers to all these factors will help you understand which of the eCommerce platform is your appropriate choice.

How are these two exactly different from each other?

Despite being one of the best and well-known options available for eCommerce needs, that happen to be different in some ways which are,

  • User friendly
  • Load time
  • Added features
  • Modes of payment
  • Cost

Before looking at their similarities and differences, let us first understand properly about these two platforms. First things first, These platforms enable the user to: Create an online store, Display all the products, and get paid online for the same.

So basically, these platforms take care of your online business throughout.

WooCommerce is the most used eCommerce platform because of its features. It is nothing but a plugin on WordPress that you can download for free and use it. It is pretty straight forward and simple to use which takes just a few minutes to set up. The plugin does include basic features in the downloadable plugin, but it does have other features that can be added according to your needs which can be free or paid features.

Magento is an eCommerce platform that is designed for huge/big businesses that happen to have huge traffic and sales on their websites. It provides with two alternatives:

  • First is the free and downloadable version that you will have to host on your respective server.
  • Another one comes with the hosting service, which is the paid version ranging from $1,500 to $2,000 minimum.

It has strong qualities and tools that provides its users with complete flexibility in designing and in the functioning of the eCommerce store.

WooCommerce vs Magento:

Let us look at the common features first,

  • Both of them have a free version available with limited features as WooCommerce is a free plugin and Magento has a free downloadable version
  • Both of them provide a listing of a huge number of products
  • Availability of Domain Name and hosting is not included in the free version of both WooCommerce and Magento
  • Both of them enable unlimited no of sales and orders

Let us move ahead and check out the differences between them.

1.User Friendly:

WooCommerce is the easiest eCommerce platform to use and to understand as well. Whereas Magento needs a certain level of expertise and technical skills which is understood only by developers. Magento does enable flexibility to the technical pros and customizations that are needed by the user of the store.

2. Load Time:

Another factor that needs to be looked upon is the speed of the eCommerce platform. Due to the lack of patience in this fast world, your website load time needs to be minimum to ensure the engagement of your visitors. The loading time of a WooCommerce page is around 414 ms whereas it is 619 ms for a Magento site with the same ram size and server type of both of them. The cause of this difference in speed is due to the size of the page. The size of a WooCommerce page is 228 KBs and the size of the Magento page is 718 KBs.

3. Added Features:

As WooCommerce is a plugin by WordPress, your store can be integrated by a third-party service such as Facebook, or Google Analytics. For an individual who is not familiar with the technicality of the website or the platform, it will be simple to use due to WordPress. Magento provides third-party plugins to add any customizations, which come with their limitations and they are less in numbers. However, if you need to make huge customizations in Magento, you might need to spend on a Magento developer to do that.

4. Modes of Payment:

An eCommerce platform can be considered to be an adequate one only and if it provides you with a bunch of options for payment. So the well-known ones need to take care of the same. WooCommerce enables integration of payment through options like Visa, PayPal, Amazon Pay, Stripe, Google Pay, Mastercard, and Alipay. It also has a payment gateway of its own if you are not willing to use any of these given. Whereas Magento offers payment options such as WePay, 2Checkout, Stripe, Braintree, Skrill, Google Checkout, and Paypal. Magento also avails cash on delivery for its users to provide to their customers.

5. Cost:

Both WooCommerce and Magento have free versions available as mentioned earlier. That did not happen to include either the Domain name or hosting. However, The free version of Magento does not come with any support or customer service and will require a VPS or cloud hosting plan to run which can be pricey. Whereas WooCommerce is a free plugin and it also will require Domain cost, SSL certification, and WordPress hosting service to run. Even though both have additional costs involved to be running, WooCommerce will cost you much less as compared to Magento.

Both platforms are excellent in their ways and are doing phenomenally in their respective target fields, you will have to understand which one is appropriate for you according to your needs and requirements. WooCommerce deals with more than 2,000,000 users whereas Magento has 250,000 users for only two reasons being cost-effective and super user friendly. Although if you are an aspiring website developer who wants to grow and is not intimidated by coding, Magento is the one to go for.
